Help identifing my cast iron powerglide

I need some help trying to determine what transmission I have in my car. The front case has a casting #3719240 dated C127 and the main cast is #3708134 K286.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bob

Thanks Roy. Any thing special I should know about a 56 trans? I notice it doesn't have a vacuum modulator...I can find a modulator at all. On the right side (pass side) of the main case the plate where the modulator would mount on a 54, is flat with no mounting holes.

      Thanks again,
      Bob

Is the trans in your 54? Does it have the 54 out put housing and original drive shaft ? Or is your drive shaft changed?
        Is it working OK?

Yes, its in my 54 with a 235 6 cyl. The out put housing has a casting #3708241 and the drive shaft is approx. 30" not including the flanges for the u joints which are approx. 2 1/4" each, for a total lenght of 34 1/2 + or-.

Initially, it was working pretty good, except the car would roll in park and make a clicking noise when it moved. I adjusted the gear position linkgage rod and now it stays put in park and the other position are fine.

The issue I have now is it doesn't shift into second as smooth as before. It hangs in first longer than before. Both first and second feel solid (no slipping) but it kinda slams into second.

I did remove the throttle valve linkage (the rod between the front trans lever and the accelerator bellcrank) when I replaced the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets. Could this be out of adjustment? I see there is a procedure in ST-12 for adjusting it. Thanks.

            Bob,
I have a 54' myself with the exact same transmission numbers. I am also running a 235 from a 62' Chevy pass. car. Unfortunatly the car was not running when I purchased the car and began the restoration process.

I am a bit curious to know if the origional style 54' water pump and distributor will work on the 62' engine. I have the origional "short" tailshaft and input shaft from a 54'. Can these be used (along with the correct yoke and driveline)on the 56' PG that I have or do I need to seek out and purchse a 54' powerglide?

The two previous owners said that the car drove fine with the components I have now.

              Hi John,
As I understand it from Roy Braatz you can. However, I beleive my driveshaft and probably yours was shorten to work with the passenger car trans. If so you may have to change your driveshaft to use the short tailshaft.

But why change the tail shaft? If the car is running fine. My car runs fine with this trans, no vibriations or other issues. It just need a throttle linkage adjustment to correct the harsh shifting.

              Enjoy the ride,
              Bob

If the engine is a 235 , yes you can use the Corvette water pump and Dist. I did this so many years ago I think you can also by changing the rear planetary gear out put shaft and housing you have Corvette in to the newer cast iron PG. Call me if you like and talk.
