        Ran one of those on a 60s gto when i was a kid,seeing this reminds me of the

          Very common in the late 60's and early 70's when "hot rod shops" were everywhere. Foam "filter" went under the screen with the holes punched in it, and as mentioned, a backfire had serious negative effects.

                Past spring I threw one away that was on my 71 LT1. Guy I bought the car from said he put it on because the other air cleaner kept hitting the hood when he got on the gas.(Motor mounts were not broke)
