Hello, I own a 65 327/350HP coupe and I have a question for all. I always have a slight gas fume in my garage and it smells like its from the orver flow tube or the vent tube near the gas tank. Is this normal for a mid year. If not, is there any way to stop this since my garage has a heater and I dont want any fires. Thanks for any help Harry

Re: 65 corvette gas vent fumes
Harry,
The overflow tube is there to allow fuel to drain from the filler neck area if you splash fuel into the rubber boot. I would check the rubber hose connections between the fuel tank pickup and the steel line that runs up along the right frame rail. Also if the smell is coming from the rear of the car check the fuel pickup at the tank and look for gasoline stains there.

The other thing to do is to fill your fuel tank and then crawl underneath the car and look for seeping or any other indication that you have pin hole in your tank. If your tank is original, then there may be a very good chance that you have some deterioration to the structure of your tank. Look carefully for seepage indicators such as a drip pattern, as indicated by a clean spot with a surrounding very dirty spot, wet tank insulation straps etc.
I say this because I had identical indicators such as you. I found that I had a pin hole leak at the bottom of the tank where it rested on the tar paper insulating straps. My only indication was a wet spot on the back side (towards the front of the car) on the tarp paper and was only visible with the car jacked up and after a very thorough search.
