    AC 44 Sparkplugs

    Hello all,
I just purchased a set of AC 44 sparkplugs at a fleamarket. They are NOS in box says Fire Ring on the box 4 green rings on insulator. The big box has part number 1559492 on it. Does anyone know when these were made and what engines the came in originally? I looked on the AC Delco website and could not find any info. I just bought a 65 350/327 coupe and was hoping that they might be correct for it but from what I could find the 43 would be correct for it. Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Bill

    Bill,

My '66 owner's manual calls for AC44 plugs as standard on my 327.

Eventhough AC heat range 4 was OE and recommended for "town and country driving", experienced small block hands know that they tend to foul and heat range 5 is much better for 99 percent of what is called "normal driving".

I found heat range 3 to be just right for race track hot lap days.

These were standard equipment in 55 passenger car 265's.

Look at the small flaps on the box --they often have a month/year dating of the box--that would tell you a pretty good timeframe for the maunfacture of the plugs.

i ran into a case trying to use older plugs

at a race in daytona, the engine would not fire. i replaced the plugs with a set of fresh ones and it fires right up. the champion plug guy earl parker sr looked at the plugs with his lighted magnifier and said the insulator part of the plug had picked up some type of coating that shorted it out and he told me that will happen with plugs that set around a long time

Instead of buying old plugs at the flea market to drive on, just run down to your local auto parts store and get some.

I just called Pep Boys and Advanced Auto. They had:

                  AC Pep Advanced
                  R43 $1.89 $1.98
                  R43S $1.98
                  R45 $1.89 $1.98

Of course, if you go to a Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or Advanced Auto, be prepared to deal with morons and idiots. I've never seen them as stupid about cars as they are now.

They kept trying to give me R44T or R43T or some other suffix. They claim that there are no such plugs without the suffix. Didn't even apologize when they put their hands on the R45 pack.

I went in to AZ to buy a set of cork gaskets for my 454 yesterday. The only ones they could find on the computer were Felpro at $44 a set. I called AA. Same deal.

I came home, check the websites, and found they have them in cork and rubber from $8.49 up to $44.95 a set. Idiots!

Sorry for the soapbox, but I hate it when people don't even know their own job and you have to do it for them.

If you want old plugs for judging, don't plan on driving on them. Buy new ones.

The body piercings and studs/rings in their chins, lips, tongue, nose, ears, and eyelids apparently impair their ability to see and think ("Uhhh, Dude...")
