Phil-----
I'm the first to be amazed when folks pay ridiculous prices for parts. However, that didn't happen here. The springs in the auction you mention, GM #3748140 which were used for 1957-59 HD suspension applications, are quite rare. Although they were discontinued from SERVICE only about 17 years ago (November, 1988), there were never really too many "around".
Also, the springs do not appear "abused" to me, at all. They appear "very NOS". These springs DO have a shorter free length than the standard springs, so it's not surprising that the standard spring pictured with them is longer. The exact same thing is also true of the 63-73 F-40/F-41 front spring, GM #3832518. It had a shorter free length than the standard springs. The much thicker wire diameter "made up for it". The same is true of the 3748140 springs.
Actually, I'm surprised that these springs didn't sell for more.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1 front 684 springs
Hey Joe thanks for info but take a good look at the spring on the right. The space between the coils isn't consistant, top of spring also. They seem to be different in height also.I think they were used, which is no prolbem.I say that because they seem to have that slight curve to them (the arc from being installed)An NOS spring will roll on a flat surface smoothly a used one won't. food for thought Phil 8063- Top

Sorry, but I don't see even a slight trace of curvature in these springs. I also don't see any other "discrepency" in these that would lead me to believe that they were anything other than NOS springs that had been "hanging around" in dusty environment for years. Generally speaking, springs that have been installed on a car are going to get a "road film" that will cover the coils pretty well, partially obscuring the paint marks. These paint markings (gray stripes, white and orange "splotches") don't appear to have any road film, at all, on them. If the springs were completely clean, that could mean that they were used, but well washed. These don't appear to have been cleaned, at all, though. Yet, the paint marks are not obscured in any real way.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1 front 684 springs Joe one more time
Hi Joe just look at the last picture (bottom one on spring the right) the space between the coil with the orange dab on it and the one above. Springs are put in for one race or one day they dont have to be dirty to be used or abused, Phil 8063- Top
