    Restorers ruined???????

Help!!!!!!!!!!! My entire collection of NCRS Restorer magazines were exposed to some moisture and the opening edge (vertical opening side) is damp and slightly wrinkled for about 1 to 2 inches over into the page. Some pages are even stuck together, but I can pry them apart if I am gentle. This is taking quite some time and I am afraid that if I let them dry totally, they will be stuck so tight that I cannot pry them apart without tearing the pages. Does anyone have any suggestions for saving my collection? Thanks in advance for your help. Re #8089

    Rex,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Unfortunately there is not much you can do but seperate the pages as quickly as possible and let them dry. As you mentioned that will stop the pages from permantely sticking together and as least make the magazines readable. Unfortunately, the wrinkles are there forever. The early issues are the problem as the later issues are easily and inexpensively replaced.

      Rex,
What if you placed them in plastic bags so they won't dry out untill you can work on all of them. Maybe a year per bag? Wish I could be of more help.

        Rex,
I have no personal experience with this method, so use it at your own risk.

Put the wet magazines in a freezer. I am told this will, over time, dry out the pages and allow them to be separated. Weeks or months are required. Local newspapers reported this method was used by the Chicago Historical society when their basement flooded.

          Maybe a little steam

Just a thought. But I think you ought to keep the stuck pages damp and not let them dry out. Ever steam open an envelope?

            Re: Maybe a little steam

Thanks to all for your advice. Since I was very frustrated last night when I discovered this at about 6:30 PM, I decided to go through each magazine and gently pull the pages apart (took about 5 hours). I was successful with all but two recent issues. Unfortunately, Dave Strickland was correct, it appears that the wrinkles are there to stay. Does anyone have any experience with removing wrinkles from magazines? Perhaps "anti-aging or anti-wrinkle" cream? Ironing? (I wish it would be that simple). Any suggestions from anyone? As always, thanks for your help. Rex #8089

              Borrow the wife's steam iron?

But try it on a test sheet first. Maybe a little starch

You could try calling Rosco Document Restoration in Montreal. Ask for Barry Ross, he's the owner. He may be able to help or offer constructive advice. His number is: 514-931-7789.

                  Rex,
As crazy as this seems you could make a stack of magazines about 4" to 6" high. Put thick cardboard protection over the top issue and place a concrete block weighing 50-75 lbs on the stack. Leave it for a few months and see what happens. Maybe it will flatten them out some. You have nothing to lose at this point.

                    Personal experience

You have a lot to lose - all of them. If they dry together, you have only a slight hope of getting them apart, and that is by rewetting them.

I had this problem with some photographs years ago, they were wet from a leak in the room. Those that were wet and I separated were ok but wrinkled.

Those that dried, some I successfully rewetted and separate and most simply peeled the coloring off of one and left on the other.

Keep them damp and then try this with a test copy. Place wax paper between the sheets and allow to dry while under pressure. That may allow the pages to be flat and not stick.

If not, then hold each one up by the spline with the pages down, and run a hair dryer on cool at them so that the pages tend to fly open and dry. Not too rough and not too hot. The hotter they are as they dry, with no pressure to flatten them, the more wrinkled they will be.
