Any good ways to repair stripped holes in fiberglass where trim screws go in? Thanks Terry #43499

Re: Stripped holes
I'll agree with Rob here on the drywall anchors.
Last month I removed a lot of my interior trim panels to repaint and discovered ALL the screw holes had those blue drywall anchors in them. At first I thought what a "Bubba" thing to do and was going to pull them all out but realized it would be a lot of work to reglass over all the enlarged holes and redrill them plus the fact that the drywall anchors are actually doing an excellent job so I left them in. In fact, in a couple of holes I ended up pulling them and replacing them with new ones.
Hey, they work great and can't be seen so why not?- Top

Re: Stripped holes
i cut a 1 1/2" square piece of 18 guage metal and rivet it to the BACKSIDE of the fiberglass panel with pop rivets. doesn't extend the new door panels away from the door enough to see the plastic drywall plugs. the metal almost always retains its threads for the trim screw. have c-1's that got this repair 30+ years ago and the trim screws still holding super. takes more time to do than the drywall approach but worth it in my opinion. mike- Top

Re: Agree w/Mikie, This is...
Corvette Central sells a "Mount Hole Repair Kit" #131125 that has 20 pre-cut/pre-drilled 1-1/4" x 1/2" steel plates and 40 pop-rivets for performing the repair Mike noted above; I went through almost one entire kit when I restored my '57 ten years ago. Pop-rivet them in place on the backside of the panel, drill the screw hole in the plate using the hole in the trim part as a template, drive the screw, and you're in business.- Top
