    B-J auction highlites?

Well after watching tonights 4 hour version of the activities, it looks like this years auction might be another record setting event. Apparently better than expected results occurred.

About the only fair market buys I saw were the '68 Hemi GTX at $69,120 (with fees) and possibly the '70 Boss Mustang at $75,600 (with fees). I've seen these prices asked at California car shows/car corrals.

Why did that GTX hemi re-creation (clone car) go for 110K?

      Dave,

That made no sense, rhyme or reason.

Because too many people have more $$$ than brains. I went to the Palm Beach B-J last year, and was amazed and what people were paying for cars they hadn't looked at. We were next to a guy in the bar (its an open bar in the back of the auction room), who was bidding on 6 figure cars from 200 yards away. He bought a 70 Chevelle LS6 for $125K that he never looked at up close. HE LIKED THE COLOR !!!

Reminds me last of years idiot ( in the yellow blazer ) who bought the equally
yellow '69 Z/28 for $113,000.00 ! That particular Camaro was reported to be
somewhat of a fake. The winner also like the color.......

More money than brains you say? You're spot on. B-J has become a shoot-out
for bragging rights as of late. It is out of control. I too was amazed at the
Hemi clone final price on Tuesday. Craig Jackson is just seeding the future
of B-J as the amount of real super cars will soone be surpassed by the number
of clones. I don't see any negitive inferences from him on the whole clone
issue. Why should he? Real or clone, he stands to make a pile of money.

What's next, bikini clad auctioneers? I used to think that B-J stood for
quality. I now believe it stands for quantity.

"Disposable Income" people have reached the age and have the money to buy what they missed out on 30+ years ago. I found it very interesting how the Ford Woody went for much less then I thought it would and the other beach cars the Willeys Jeep and Fiat went much higher then a the Woody.

Clone cars are just a way of life. Of course I do not agree with them, but at least the owner of the Clone Hemi stated the fact up front.

I do like the "Restro Rods" like the 67 Corvette with the C5 engine and suspension, but $95K. I don't think the seller made much on that car after B&J took out their fees.

Some of the Mustangs going way over market value, I thought the best buy of then night was the Series II XKE Jag for about 29K...it looked really nice on TV and it appeared to be a fresh restro....to me that was a bargin.

Overpriced were most of the Camaros...that Hugger Orange SS was way over value and the Black Z/28 that was suppose to be brown was way over value.

Tacking on a few more days, only makes this acution more likely to make B&J much richer.

Can't wait to see what the 63 SWC's will be going for, several are 340HP cars, the L-76 coupes...so keep your eyes peeled for those....

                Regards..

Watched the Tue. nite "Bucks and Jerks" aka Barrett-Jackson auction.
                      Some thoughts and comments:
The only good news was that blowhard Brock Yates was not present to denigrate the domestic iron.
What's with the amply endowed babes leaning against the fenders? At least the cameraman knew what he liked!
$110,000 for a CLONE? Hello, Craig J., this is supposed to be a "classic" car auction, not a freak show.
Speaking of freak shows, now the "next big thing" is supposed to be Resto-Rods?! Paging Dr. Frankenstein.
Where is Allen Decadney(sp)? His Brit take on the classic American muscle cars was very entertaining. Is it a "boot" or a "bonnet"?
There's still hope for me when I see cars with scratches, poor panel fits and dull chrome going for big bucks. They're not all #1's!
Finally, I'd like to go there next year, just to say I've been.

The Tuesday night group is "affordable muscle" night, so almost anything came across the block; the big-bucks stuff shows up Friday and Saturday. At least their color guy last night was Steve Magnante (Tech Editor of HOT ROD magazine), so at least he knows American iron. Dunno if we'll be entertained later on by Alain de Cadenet or not

                          Re: B-J auction highlites?

whatever some enthusiast is willing to pay for a well-done clone, perfectly represented as such, is pretty much his business, as far as I am concenred, and I agree with Colin on that score - I wish the C2 "clone" was more accepted in this corner of the car hobby, might encourage some of the fakers (who are, if not ethical, certaily very very talented when it comes to creating clones of original cars). And it is not entirely accurate to call out one fellow for paying a foolishly high price for a car at auction, unless he came in with a "kill all competitors" high bid, there was at least another party just a thou or so away from ownig the car.

and that "today's younger guys have some extra disposable income" concept is not really suporrted by a historical reveiw of disposable income data - by the way, was this also the explanation for the run up in muscle car - exotic car prices in the early 90s?

If there are guys out there that love these cars as much as I do, and are willing to buy them at BJ or Pro Team prices rather than do some due diligence and perhaps find a better deal on the same car, I forgive them; for me the hunt is part of the fun, for them they would rather pay to avoid the hassle - but we all love the same cars, so they are brothers . . . .

another BJ observation - interesting how well the resto-rods are doing, even in Corvette-land, like that 65 Corvette Vert last night with the modern day engine plant (lot# 91, $102.6k with fees)

I'll be out there tomorrow . . . . . not wearing my yellow jacket this year though

The former owner had to be grabbing his ankles. The new owner got the car for free and only paid a third of the restoration cost!!!!

Not likely. At Barrett you can bid on your own car. If the sellers don't like the price it's going for they just bid on it themselves and pay the 16% fees to Barrett-Jackson. Costly to be sure, but not as costly as selling your car way under fair value.
