My father has a 1971 VIN 194371S20399, with an engine code V0709CTJ. Dad is the second owner since 1976. The motor has never been changed, but the code indicates a 1970 engine. What is going on? Is this possible? We are considering selling it, but need some answers in order to decide on a selling price. Is this a good or bad situation, I am at a loss to this point. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: 1971 HELP!
I'd go look again (and closely) at the stamp pad as 1971 SB engine codes are pertty close to 1970 code sequences. You are correct that the CTJ sequence indicates a 1970 350/350 MT AC setup vs. the equivalent used in 1971. Since '71 was the first year of the new 50-State Federal Emissions standards, I'd find it difficult to believe this was a factory 'opps' (putting a '70 SB into a '71 vehicle from the factory) because there was a significant degree of 'detuning' that occurred from one year's engine to the next...- Top

Re: 1971 HELP!
Jack------
There was no 1971 equivalent of the 1970 L-46. For 1971 there was only the base engine and the LT-1 as far as small blocks go. The reduced compression equivalent of the L-46 didn't appear until 1973 with the L-82.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
