    C2 Steering Column Bearings

I'm in the process of rebuilding and installing my '63 Steering Column. I purchased both the UPPER and LOWER Bearings. The Upper appears very close to my original. The Lower one however seems to be smaller than the origianl that I knocked out. Some of the Vendor catalogs show '63 to '66 as the same lower bearing. Others show '64 to 67's. Is this yet another unique "pain in the butt'63 part"? Interestingly, the part from the cataloge I ordered said for '63 and the printed part number matched the number on the outside of the plastic bag. However the parts bag also had '64 to '66 printed on it as well?? I don't want to just re-order as I most likley will get the same part again. Thanks, Arne NCRS 16541

ps. Is there special grease recommended for these as they are a little different.

Arne, You may have also knocked out the lower bearing retainer. I have done several 63s and I believe I recall a bearing retainer or housing. Check to see if you still have it or it is listed in one of the parts catalog. I would recommend Long Island Corvette Supply. good luck, Joe

      Arne:

My 9/77 parts book (Gr. 6.521) shows a unique upper bearing for '63 (5672508) and indicates that it includes the horn wire. The "bearing assembly, intermediate shaft and yoke" without telescopic wheel (7802845) is the same for '63-'65. I notice that the shop manual has nothing about assembly and reassembly of the steering column assembly, so take good notes to help me out when I assemble mine in few months. A lot of guys want to use wheel bearing grease on everything, but it's designed for higher temperatures, loads, and speeds and it becomes quite "gummy" at room temperature. Baring any official advice from the OEM I would use plain old general purpose NGLI #2 white lithium grease on the steering column bearings.
