    Re: Rear Spindle Support

re rear spindle support gene manno your spindle supports caliper support casting shock support casting along with the strut rods are all natural the strut rods original look has a bluish hue the caliper castings and spindle support could be cast sprayed that would involve a small originaity point deduction but be worth the preservation be sure to remove the cast spray from cast bottom ends to restore the machined faces were the shock mount and strut rod go thru a circular sander does a nice job of this and they look freshly milled the spindle castings may be the hd type or standard on hp cars the hd is bigger at the end where the strut rod goes thru i am not sure if the casting number is the same or not be sure to note the spindle supports are machined as rights and lefts this could be noted by the flats in the holes d shaped for the shock mounts

      Re: Rear Spindle Support

I was unaware that any Heavy Duty spindle support was used in 1967. As far as I know, Corvettes from model year 1964 through model year 1974 used spindle supports with a casting number of 3820643(part numbers 3820643 and 3820644). These supports have the "small" lower end for use with the "small" bushing strut rods(p/n 3819205), used from 1963 through 1974. In 1975, the spindle support was revised to a somewhat heavier-duty design with casting number 348103(part numbers 348103 and 348104). This support had the "large" lower end for use with the "large" bushing strut rod(p/n 348391 and later 459076), also used from 1975-on. Eventually, presumably when the old stock ran out, GM service parts discontinued the 3820643-4 supports and serviced all 1963-82 Corvette applications with the 348103-4 spindle supports. These were finally discontinued last year.

I believe that 1963 models used a different spindle support which I know little about except that it apparently lacked the "webbing" between the shock support shaft "struts". I do not know the casting number of this piece.

I would be very interested in learning the details of any heavy duty spindle supports used on pre-75 models.

        Re: Rear Spindle Support

Joe, We may have found an unidentified usage of this heavier spindle support. I was talking about this heavier casting with Ron Gruber over the summer. We both had seen usage on heavy duty suspensions with spread out usage on 350 HP small block '66 & '67 cars. All the cars noted had correct style small end strut rods and appeared original. This must be a standard part regardless of suspension option for mid 70's vintage as you stated, cause they all seem to have the heavier style support along with big end strut rods. Going back to that '63 style, that must be a very early design without the center web. I have not run into a car early enough to take notice. Very interesting.

          Re: Rear Spindle Support

Gene----I'd be very interested in learning the spindle support casting numbers from these early HD suspension cars. Also, casting dates since these supports usually have them. Unfortunately, the casting dates only include the last digit of the year. Consequently, of course, a casting manufactured on July 15, 1967 and one manufactured on July 15, 1977 or 1987 would carry the same date.

As far as I know, the 348103 support was not manufactured before 1974, but I could be wrong on this. I know for sure that 348103-4 were not available as service parts before 1974. However, there could have been another casting number used for these early HD spindle supports which was never made available as a service part. That's uncommon, but it does happen. C4 A-frames for Z51/Z06 were an example of parts used in production, but never available in service.

Anyway, if you or anyone else can get me any info relative to casting numbers/dates, I'll research further.
