    '63 Y-Ducts

    Thanks, Tim!

I posted my next message before I read yours. I may have a little more info on the Y-duct topic as well. I was not aware of the totally square design! Mine has the front corner lopped off to clear the defroster mechanism.

However, mine has an obviously re-positioned "fin" inside the Y-duct where it points to the passenger side. Maybe this is the third variant? As I recall, there was a molded fin previously, and this has been sawn off by hand. The re-positioned fin is thin steel riveted in place inside the duct and forces the air to move toward a different direction.

I wish it wasn't such a PITA to get under there without damaging things. I'd love to take a closer look at this area!

If you have a '69 back parts book,

look at the illustration sheets in group 9.00. The sheet shows a '64-'67 heater/duct system which is a little different from the '63 but you'll get the idea. Maybe somebody can post it. The '63 duct extension was held on by a screw and a clip as Duke mentioned. Kinda' flimsy to say the least.

It's my onpinion that all '63's had the same heater duct system (non AC) but that's speculation on my part. I think there was more than one level of radio panel in '63 to accomodate the heater system. Joe Ray posted on this awhile back but I have forgotten what he said. Sounded right at the time.

Re: If you have a '69 back parts book,

Thanks, Mike. I do have a '69 parts book, and I can see the outlet on p. 9-7P. Note that this picture is for A/C-only cars. In fact, this is the same illustration that appears in the C60 section of the '63 AIM.

The question here is, is this outlet used on non-A/C '63 cars? And from what I'm hearing and seeing, this outlet may have been used on all early to mid '63 cars, A/C or not. However, late in the '63 production year, the hole in the end of heater box and this outlet, apparently disappeared.

So, Tracy, put that saw down and back away from the heater box!

Re: If you have a '69 back parts book,

The '63 outlet was different than the '64-'67. I was using the illustration for reference of location only.

Re: If you have a '69 back parts book,

Yup! Interesting to note that a) this part is not called out i.e. not numbered in this illustration and b) does not belong in a 64-67 illustration anyway. Trying to get some mileage out of a complex drawing, I suppose.
