Do you drive a car you spent six figures on?

Do you drive a 4.5 Million dollar BUS to the local Burger King Cruise Night? What the heck to you do with a six figure car? Can't drive it....so do you drive it. park it. what the heck to do you do? I would rather buy a 30K car, fix it up and drive it....I think these people at B&J are crazy....

The high dollar ones of course are museum pieces, but you have to assume the buyers have many more cars, and many of them that they drive.

I thought it was great that the bus blew everything else away. Maybe GM corporate bought it back.

I usta' do a lot of FCNA (Ferrari Club) events with a car buddy who is really into the Prancin' Horses. At a track event in Savannah in the 90's there was a local doctor their who had an original either Testarossa or GTO (can't remember) that the rumor mill said was worth about 2.5 million at that time. Not only did he drive it to the track and give it a thorough thrashin', but I watched in horror as he got out a battery operated drill and installed a tag on the back panel between the tail lights by drilling holes and screwing sheet metal screws in it. I've finally gotten over the night sweats it caused but it took years of therapy.

All NCRS Chapters hsould be involuntarily required to attend a Ferrari race outing. These are people who enjoy the cars the way they see fit. I sold an original engine 62 fuelie to the owner of the local Ferrari dealer here outside of Philadelphia. It was always something he wanted, go figure. Anyway, he uses the car like, well, a car. He also told me about a couple he knows who own not one but two authentic 62 GTO's, Ferraris that is. They RACE both cars. That means risking $30-50 MILLION dollars at any given time. Some here might say they are stupid. I say GOD BLESS THEM! They probebly have more fun than I could only imagine having. I have a difficult enough time judging for myself how I should spend my time. Who am I to judge how others spend their time and money.

Re: Do you drive a car you spent six figures on?

A gentleman that lives not too far from me purchased at auction a few years ago (at a record price at the time---3.5 million or something, I forget) a significant Farreri, a previous LeMans winner. He has been know to drive it about, I even know of one occasion when he took a friend out to dinner in the car. Parking it in the resturant parking lot while they enjoyed their dinner. So at least some do drive em.

There have been some less than flattering remarks posted on the technical discussion board re what someone else does with their $ (not just B-J, but the "can you believe that" eBay threads too). I would suggest you try to think about it a little differently. Some folks buy a car at $40K. This is half of their annualy income, and they still have a mortgage, etc. I would not even venture a guess what percentage of their net personal worth 40K represents, but too some it is probably significant. Others may decide to spend 1 million on a car, yet this is equal to one month salary, and is a small percentage of his or her net worth. Which of the two is more financially sound and reasonable? Subsitute any numbers you like, the point is not everything is like you or I always see it. Because one buys a classic car at a value I consider too high does not make that person any less respectful or appreciative of the car and it certainly would not be cause for the rest of us to publicly call them "stupid" or some of the other things I have seen here.

            Gary,

I agree. I think a lot of the posts about how stupid a buyer is because he over paid for a Corvette is like biting the hand that feeds them. I sure have no problem with the fact that my cars are probably worth more today because of some of the amounts paid at the BJ auction. Just my opinion.

Jim, I agree with you 100% on the requirement to attend a Ferrari club event. At my first FCNA Concourse there was a 275 that was announced as being probably the finest example in the world. Standing there looking at it I was surprised to see that it had a Sears Die Hard Battery and an Ansa exhaust on it. It made me think of the snobbery that I've personally seen in the Corvette hobby in terms of absolute sarcasm toward some cars/owners over seemingly insignificant details on an otherwise magnificent car. One of my BIG pet peeves, the galloping overspray fungus on 67 big block alum. intake manifolds, now reaching damn near the carb bases in some cases is a prime example of extreemism gone bad, and it makes me wonder if some people have never seen a real one. Seems like we worry so much about screw heads we lose track of the overall car sometimes and what the hobby really can mean. The Ferrari guys will track their cars to their limits on Saturday then clean em up and show em on Sunday. I remember playin' cat and mouse at 140 MPH+ in my buddies F40 all day Saturday with a several million dollar 512S, then admiring the two of em sitting close together on the Concours field at the Savannah Yacht Club on Sunday as if they were trailer queens, and not one soul sayin' either car had the wrong phillips screw heads in the console as if it was a sign of a deeper social disease. Yep, those guys DO KNOW how to enjoy their cars.

Do you drive a car worth 5 figures?

I saw that my little 327 PG car went for 75k at BJ, think I'll take it out for a spin. Wait I'm driving a 75k car! I need to up my insurance. LOL

Very true on the percentages of your income. There are really a lot of bargains in Corvettes, if you think about it.

Today, you can find lots of late '70s and 80s Corvettes for roughly $7000, give or take.

For me, that is equivalent to me finding a $600 drivable Corvette around 1975. I don't remember any, as I seem to remember most the midyears being roughly $2500 - $3500 or more in that period.

So the guy who is making $1 mill per year can look at a $100,000 Corvette as the same type of bargain. His $200,000 would be equivalent to my $1200 Corvette in '75 or a $14,000 Corvette today.

I recall listening to Chip Miller talk about Corvette prices many years ago. The one statement that he made that has always stuck with me was something like "You can't pay too much for a nice Corvette, you may just buy it too early!"

When you're phone-bidding from your $32 million Gulfstream private jet at 45,000 feet, you don't sweat the "small stuff"
