    '63 Y-Duct / Outlet Mini Survey

Tracy Crisler opened up a thread on this about half-way down here. You might want to review that thread as well. I have some questions with regards to the heater outlet.

Note this outlet is a '63-only item. I'm trying to establish if it was used on all 63's, A/C-only 63's, and if it was discontinued late in '63 production. There also seems to be some question re. the outlet's shape.

    - Do you have the outlet indicated in the following picture? If not, do you have the hole in your heater box shown by the arrow?

    - Is your car originally A/C?

    - If you have neither the outlet nor the hole, what is your VIN?

    - The link to aatemp02.jpg shows what I believe may be a correct part. The link to aatemp03.jpg shows a claimed correct part that recently sold on eBay. Note the difference in shape. Is your outlet shaped like either of these?

Thank you for your help! If this develops into something useful, I'll be sure to post it for you.

    Pete

Got one in my car that I believe to be original. Mid-March build, non - A/C car has the piece you show in aatemp03.jpg. Cross section is rectangular with one corner lopped off.

Here's a pic of my 63. 19500 ish SN. A July car. I don't ever remember having this "extra" duct, but I saw it on EBAY too. No AC. Chuck

It goes right on the end of that square hole

that your picture shows, like we discussed before. Most of them broke off due to the flimsy attachment. '64's are different than '63.

Keep 'em Coming!! Come on 63-ers

Chuck, you're not the only guy in your range with the hole and no indication of an outlet.

There's a rough pattern developing (a small but consistent sampling so far)

heater box hole and outlet thru 4/63

heater box hole but no outlet into 7/63

              no heater box hole/outlet 7/63-on

Pete, looking at Chuck's picture you can not tell if the extension was originally there or not. But, you can see a screw that holds the "Y" duct. If there was an extension originally, I believe there would be a screw hole to the left of the screw you can see. There would be no reason to drive a self tapping screw into the heater box unless an extension was installed.

Unless there is a hole in the metal part of the "Y" dust that also requires a screw. Thought of that after I hit enter on my prior post.

                      Harry/Chuck re. Chuck's Picture

I hadn't noticed this previously, but I've never seen a Y-duct with the screw in this location! I would expect to see it in the BACK upper corner. This appears to be in the FRONT upper corner. Or maybe there are two screws?

The two outlets I've seen (there were two, I now know) would not mount with the screw in this location.

                        Hi Gordon,
My car #15,240 (3rd week May) seems to have the outlet shown in aatemp03. I'll check again but I think it is secured in the upper left corner.
That part on ebay was correct I believe.

Hi Gordon..FWIW I looked at my '63's today and my #484 Sept '62 has the square type outlet and is attached with 1 screw. My other '63 #2206 does not have the outlet, but this doesn't suprise me because it was molested in it's childhood. By the way, these are non A/C cars. Regards Frank

                            There are Two

                            Hi Syd!

I now know that there are two versions of the outlet. The one recently on eBay (aatemp03) was the later version. The one in aatemp02 is the early version. If owners will continue to respond, I'm hoping to estimate the cutover point for this change.
