Were C2 and C3 gas tanks plated or was the metal they were made from resistant to corrosion? Thank you for any replies. My opinion is that they were not plated but made from special sheet steel. Thanks, Terry

I believe that the original tanks were manufactured of TERNE steel. Terne steel is sheet steel which has been hot coated with a lead-tin (about 90% lead and 10% tin) coating. NI-TERNE steel which is mostly used today for steel fuel tanks uses a thin, electroplated NICKEL coating over the steel which then is hot-coated with the lead-tin coating. This provides a more durable overall coating. There is no visible difference bewteen TERNE and NI-TERNE steel since the nickel plating of the latter is beneath the lead-tin coating (which is what's visible). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
