    1957 Harmonic Balancer

What does it take to keep these on? This on has come off twice. There is no bolt hole in the crank, so this is just a light pressure fit. How does one improve the odds of it not coming back off (besides drilling and tapping the crank)?
    Thanks,

Steve, the balancer on my 57 is not a 'light pressure fit'. I needed a puller to remove it and considerable force to reinstall it. In 35 years, the balancer has never come off on its own. I would suspect the fit of yours is too loose. Unfortunately, I do not have the correct specs for the crank OD or the balancer ID.

Steve back in 1969 I rebuilt the 327/300 in my 64 convertible and installed a new balancer. It came off one morning after driving the car for weeks although it was an interferance fit. Due to time constraints I had the Chevy dealership check it out and they installed a new balancer and told me the one I bought and installed was the wrong one. I later drove the 64 from San Diego to Glynco, Ga and then to Dallas and never had a problem with the one they installed.

        Steve,
I had the same problem with mine. Joe Lucia gave me the part number of a current replacement from GM but I don't have it with me right now. It ended up working out fine so far. I will try to get the number this evening and post it tomorrow.

We put the updated GM part number balancer on (3896904). It was lots tighter that the other one. Had to be coaxed real hard to get it on. There is no doubt that this one will stay on. But, as usual it is now not concours correct! I wonder if anyone is welding up the inside of old balancers and remachining to the correct interference fit (looks like about .003-.005"- crank snout is supposed to be 1.247")?
          Thanks for the help folks,
          Steve

Are you using the correct half moon key lock, if worn it's not keeping it tight
