    1968 Fan Shroud Problem?

I am working on a Frame Up Restoration of my 68 Big Block and I am having a problem with getting the Fan Shroud to fit properlly. Any advice would be appreciated.

The lower metal radiator "baffle" was missing when I got the car. I have gotten a "NOS" baffle and mounted it. The Fiber Glass shroud fit fine with out the baffle in place, but now the shroud hits the two weld nuts on the baffle and the core support won't bolt to the frame due to the shroud hitting the baffle.

If I use more shims to lift the support and shroud higher, it would take quite a few shims to rais it high enough to clear the baffle.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Steve-----

Regardless of what the AIM says, I'm not so sure that the baffle actually was used for 1968 applications with the fiberglass shroud. Basically, the lower baffle is designed for use with the circular steel shroud used for small blocks with manual transmission. I certainly don't know, for sure, that it was not used with fiberglass shrouds. It would be interesting to hear from someone with an original 1968 with big block (except L-88) or small block with automatic transmission----both used the fiberglass fan shroud.

My '68 L71 has a fiberglass shroud only. No additional metal baffle.

That metal part does not belong on your car. My May built 68 did not have it and it did have its original fiberglass shrould. Also, I don't see the two together in the assembly manual. It is possible early cars had them but I don't know those cars very well. Just my opinion. Terry

My Sept. of '67 (#164) 400hp has both the fiberglass shroud and the metal pan. G.

George, If you ever get that thing up in the air you should take pictures of it. Would like to know about how it is attached and looks, etc. Thanks, Terry

I reviewed detailed pictures of a 68 L-89 I almost bought, which was NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold. It has the Fan Shroud, but no Metal Baffle. I don't see how it is possible for both to be on the car at the same time, so I have now taken the metal baffle off.

The Assembly Manual does show both in the L-36 section which is why I thought it was supposed to be on my car. But now that I have thoroughly tried to put both on together, I just don't see how it would be possible.

If I find out different, then I will put the Baffle back on or get the correct parts, but with what I currently have and am finding this baffle won't work with the fiberglass shroud.

                Thanks for all the responses,

                Steve

Terry, it turns out that I should not have spoken from memory. It is my '72 LT1 that has the lower pan, not the '68 427. Sorry for the wrong info, G.
