    1967 Horn Button

There is a NOS horn button up for auction 460678496, the seller states:

NOS/OEM/GM/ORIGINAL IN THE BOX. THIS HORN BUTTON FITS 65 AND 66 WITHOUT TELESCOPIC STEERING AND ALL 67s. He did reponded to the question The upper left square is white not black, The 67.

    The seller replied:

I HAVE HAD THIS COMMENT BEFORE AND YOU WILL FIND THAT THE NCRS BOOK IS INCORRECT. I HAVE 2 FRIENDS WITH SURVIVOR 67s AND THEY ARE BOTH WHITE IN THE TOP.

Question: Were both black and white upper squares avalible, and how do you identify the reproductions?

I can't say for sure, I have two, one which I believe is original to my '67 car and a spare. They both have black upper left corners in the flag.

However in the Noland's book, page 383, that '67 steering wheel has a white upper left corner.

        William,

My original late 67 has black in the upper square. I couldn't read the part number on mine as it is partially under the horn attachment ring (but looks like it only has 5 digits). Also where the one on ebay has GT, mine has a D in the direction of down, or I assume means down.

I always thought the 67 had a slightly more rounded side bevel, although it can't tell the difference from the picture.

Maybe it's a GM service replacement where they standardized things. There are probably some sharper eyes out there, the ebay number is 4606784961 (with a 1 after your posted number)

              Re: 1967 Horn Button

              Hi William:

I am not an expert on this topic, but for 1967 it is my understanding that the factory installed horn button was black in the upper square. However, at some point the GM service replacement part that was available over the counter ended up with a white upper square.

So, the part you are looking at is quite likely a genuine GM part, but the fact that it is individually packaged in a GM box indicates that it is a service replacement. As Joe Lucia has often pointed out in this forum, the service replacement parts were not always identical to the ones used in production, especially if some time had elapsed between the time the parts were being used in production and the time the service replacement part was manufactured.

'65-'66 had a sharp corner where the outer edge met the front edge, and the new '67 button had an obviously rounded corner (safety issue); it will "fit" a '67, but isn't "correct".
