    Joe Lucia Please-Question

    Joe

I'm hoping you can answer a guestion about a wireing harness # for me, I've located a harness that I am interested in (nos) but can't confirm the aplication for it, it is supposed to be an ignition harness for a 68-71 small block with theft alarm! I have both a 70 and 72 assembly manual but it does not show up in either of these, perhaps it is for a 71, however I thought the anti-theft became available in 72 (I may be mistaken) anyhow the #'s are as follows

group-2.195 3 different part #'s 8901749,------6297666,---------6295453 the #,s were apperently changed over time------ Could you please tell me what year these are for, and also the term ignition harness does not correspond to my manuals---would this be apart of the dash harness or the engine harness in the engine compartment?

Thank you Joe if anyone has the answers to this I'm sure it would be you

    Regards

The part which you are looking at is the UA6 alarm system harness. This is a "stand-alone", seperate harness which is used only when a 68-71 Corvette is equipped with the optional UA6 alarm system. For 1972+ Corvettes, when the alarm system became standard equipment, I believe that this harness' functions were integrated into the car's other forward wiring harness(es).

In any event, the part number for the original harness was GM #6295253. This harness was used for 1968 and 1969 Corvettes. In 1970, this harness was discontinued from PRODUCTION and SERVICE, and replaced by GM #6297666. For 1971, the latter harness was also discontinued from PRODUCTION and SERVICE and replaced by GM #8901749. The latter part remained available in SERVICE for all 1968-71 Corvettes with UA6 until it was discontinued in 1980.

Hi I had to do a little homework for you here, hope this will somehow get you on the right track. First through my experience with assembly manuals, parts books, and working for a Chevrolet Dealership, I have had the opportunity to aquire old parts books as the new were coming in to replace the old. As I got into the hobby many years ago I bought an assembly manual and tried to use those numbers when ordering my parts. What I found was that very few of those numbers were good. I then started with and stayed with the parts manuals, only using the assembly manuals as a back up, to point out a parts clearer location to the GM parts catalogue. OK that out of the way, in the April of 71 GM catalogue, 8901749 is listed for 68 to 71 Anti-theft harness. This listing runs up to December 78. At this point I have a few catalogues missing. Up until December of 82 at which point the harness was dropped from the catalogue. So somewhere between 78 and 82 the harness that you are looking for was discontinued from GM. Now to the assembly manuals, I don't have a 68 AIM, I do have 69 and 70 so, when looking it up in the 69 manual I found your 6297666 number, in the 70 manual it does show a number change for the same harness to 8901749. These are both the same harnesses. Your third number I couldn't find anywhere. Hope this does help you. Oh yes, Anti theft systems option UA6 was available from 68 to 71 only. This one harness if I remember correctly runs from the key switch (rear Deck) and includes anti-theft horn hookup, relay and flasher hookup(rear jack storage compartment), door switch hookup, and hood switch hookup, and possibly a ground connection.

          Re: Joe Lucia Please-Question

Interesting post. Back in August 1970 when I bought my new 70 I wanted the alarm system on it since my previous Corvette a 64 convertible had been stolen. After taking the car it took about a year to finally get the alarm wiring harness through the parts department. I have to this day not installed the harness and its stored away in a box of other parts. I am going to have to search it out and see which part number my harness has on it.
