    1968-82 Headlight Adjustments

I have a condition on my '72 that has me baffled. The right side headlight door does not go up high enough to enable the removal of the besel (about 1/16"). I've verified that when the accuator rod is all the way out, the mechanism locks tight to the pivot depressing the lamp warning switch completely, so any adjustment at that point would be useless. Also, when the rod is disconnected from the piviot assembly, I still can't open the door high enough manually to remove the besel. I don't believe it's the accuator causing my problem. There must be some other adjustment I'm missing. The aligment of the door is perfect to the body when closed. So, where's the adjustment for increasing the height.

Thanks in advance for your input.....
    Frank

Frank, You are not getting any bites on this one. It's been a while since I had my '68 apart, but here goes. The stop position on late models is an over center mechanism. That is it self locks when up. The link arm, not the rod, controlls it's stop position against an adjusted screw. I don't remember exactly where that screw is. But I do remember it is accessable with the front grill and black plastic shield removed. The center link arm is attached to the rod thats part of the canister. Let me know or not if this gets ya going.

I see Gene has tried to help you from memory and I too could take a stab but it would be rather lengthy and also from memory. The correct way to solve your problem is to buy a copy of the '72 Chevy Chassis Service Manual. In there, you'll find an ENTIRE CHAPTER devoted to the Corvette body.

Why? Corvette was the only passenger vehicle of the era that was NOT body by Fisher and documentation could not be left to the applicable, separate, Fisher Body manual. Now, once you buy this book, you'll fall in love with it and wonder how in (*&& you lived without it!

I gives clear step-by-step instructions for R&R of almost every body assy. This includes the pop up headlamp housings. You'll find there are 3-4 independent adjustments each with it's own purpose. Last, you'll see it IS possible for the headlamp can to open and lock into position at the wrong "sight" angle through a combination of mis-adjustment.
