'67 SB Steering Linkage w/o PS....

The latest issue of the '67 Judging Manual states that the steering linkage is painted semi-gloss "as an assembly". The picture below is what I consider an assembly. The adjusting sleeves are connected to each other with the threaded knuckles, which are supposed to be natural, so how can the linkage be painted as an assembly? I take this to be a very misleading statement and should be corrected.

Anyway I know the five knuckles (yellow arrows) should be a natural finish, as well as the idler arm. What about the relay rod, (blue arrows) should that be natural or painted semi-gloss? Lastly, the steering stabilizer shock, it came in the GM box painted gloss black, is that correct or should it be dark grey like the shock absorbers? The JM makes no mention of what color it should be painted. I'd really like to get this matter straight now, instead of later. Thanks in advance. PT

    Patrick-----

The steering linkage was COATED as an assembly with a thin, black, asphaltic coating, similar or identical to that used for frames. Everything that you have pictured here was part of that assembly EXCEPT the steering shock absorber and bracket. Those pieces were installed at St. Louis. The shock absorber was painted semi-gloss black and I believe that the bracket was, too.

The only part of the steering linkage that didn't get covered with the coating was the ball studs on the tie rod ends. These were covered with a cardboard tube to protect them. The asphaltic coating operation was somewhat hap-hazard and bare spots here-and-there are common.

I had to do the same research recently on my '66. In addition to what Joe describes, previous posts in the archives and the TIM&JG indicate that the pitman arm on non-PS cars is also part of the coated assembly and that the shock absorber is painted gray. As Joe indicates, the bracket is semi gloss black.

          Patrick,
I have a 67 steering damper that I'm 99% sure is original and it is painted gray.

            Pat -

The description in the JG is correct. The items in yellow in the photo aren't "knuckles" - they're tie rod ends, part of the steering linkage "assembly". The "steering knuckles" (with "natural" finish) are the steering arms bolted to the spindles that have the holes for the outer tie rod end studs.

Yes, the later steering shock absorbers were gray. The 63-E65 were the black ones.
