Need To Find Out If This Engine Is Correct For 57

I am asking this question for a friend who has a 57. I know very little about anything other than C3's (and not much more about them). So I have turned to this forum.

My friends 57 does has a 60's 327 in it. He would like to replace it with the correct 289. There are 2 on Ebay right now that are advertised as 57 motors.

    and

My friends 57 is #5635. Anyone know the build date? Thanks

The first engine is closest to the one you would need. Your friends car was built sometime in the month of August. The engine description is very close except the suffix at the end of the date F624EA. This would indicate a Flint block built June 24. The Ea is not correct for a Corvette. The sufix on the second engine is not correct either and the build date on that engine is January.

In addition, the first engine has 997 heads, which are becoming rare and expensive; the second engine has 539 heads, which are much more plentiful. The 997 heads were only used on carbureted cars and 250hp fuelies, and the 539's were used on 283hp fuelies.

I can't find any info on the "EA" stamp. Any information on that?

With a June '57 casting date, the "EA" suffix indicates a 283/245hp (2x4) 3-speed manual engine from a passenger car.
