    carpet installation in 62

    Hi again

I asked this question before but could not remember. How does the carpet get installed in a 62 vette? Am I supposed to use adhesive glue, screws, or just lay it in? If screws are used, exactly where do they go? Can someone tell me the correct way to install it? Is there a special order in which carpet piece goes in first? Can someone tell me the order?

    Thank you...........John

The long driver and passenger sections go in last. Glue all the sections. But you don't need much. Most people use the spray 3M glue. Be careful with it because it'll lift lacquer. Some carpet sets don't come with the padding. You need to buy that separately. Some sets require you to cut out the hi-beam switch cutout. The outboard sides are held in by the sill plates and the kick panels.

The only screws are the ones the AIM show. 2 screws per side in the footwell. I only found 1 per side on my car. The lower one. No evidence of an upper one as shown in the AIM. You can find the old holes by shining a light in the passenger compartment when the old carpet's out, and getting under the car. Look for the holes where the AIM says they ought to be. Stick a pin through from the outside in to show you where the holes are. Then you'll need to finesse your way of putting and gluing the carpet down without knocking out the pin and then getting the pin replaced with the screw. If you do it this way, you won't have to put another hole in your car.

      John...

To add; The carpet is laid in five sections. starting with the center rear (glove box) center front (behind the center console) and center under the shifter console plate. Next are the right & left sections. Cutout the dimmer hole & install the dimmer grommet as chris stated.

One "key" is postioning the center shifter console plate section seams with the fiberglass ridges located on both sides of the shifter console area. Care in gluing the overlap areas, from the glue getting on the carpet.
