    C2 Heater Box

I'm not one to add, or remove, something from my car just because the Judging or Assembly manuals say it should, or should not, be there. I rather base it on actual obsevations. Hence my question. Upon rebuilding my heater box using the standard reproduction kit of seals and gaskets, I see the kit includes a gray, horseshoe looking piece of foam that attaches to the outside surface of the heater box near the firewall. Again, this is on the interior surface of the wall. Per the instructions, it is attached around the outside surface of the box. Simple enough. The CAM also shows this piece, though not very clearly. Anyway, upon removal of the box I see no evidence of this foam whatsoever. Knowing this car, I am very confident that the box has never been removed. My question is, have any other C2 folks who have rebuilt their heater box observed that this gray foam was not present on their installation? Sorry for the long dissertation. Thanks for any help.

    Bob,
Gray foam is around my heater box, 1964 C2. Owned since 67 and the box has never been replaced during my ownership.

Do not believe that it has ever been changed - no evidence of removal. Would expect that if a shop worked on it, that foam would be left off.

Removed the heater box from my '65 -- there was no sign of the gray foam piece any where. I don't know if the box had previously been removed. I did install a new one.

I have been considering this foam piece lately as well. Is it sandwhiched between the heater box and the firewall, or do you bolt up the heater box first, then cement the gray foam piece around/over the edge?

            Mark et al.
My original '65 had this gray foam cemented around the interface at the firewall and heater box. It is NOT a bolt on as provided in some heater box rebuild kits. A reproduction of this part is available from LIC.

              Re: C2 Heater Box

Thanks all for the responses. I'll probably glue a new one on. If nothing else it will help seal the heater box to fire wall a little better. Unless one is the original owner, you never really know exactly what has happened to your car over the years. I sure don't see any reminents of any glue or foam though and looking at all the seals and the core, talking to previous owners, etc etc I don't believe this box has ever been removed. Oh well, I just hate to mislead anyone else who may be looking at this area in the future. Thanks for all the help.

                Bob,
After reading your post, I went to the '65 AIM to get additional information.

The gray foam that we are discussing is shown on page E73. It is item 2, P/N 3830770, and is called Insulator. It is attached using item 3, cement.

                Hope this helps.

                Regards,
                Gene
