    57 distributor part

Help, I need a source for a timing clamp for a 57 905 F.I. distributor. This is the large 4" clamp that holds the top and bottom together and is loosened and tightened for timing adjustment. I've tried all the normal sources without any luck so if you have one or can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks Rich

The part you seek was GM #1938835. It was discontinued in October, 1963. 42 years is a long time for the original supply to hold out. It's possible, though, that one of the FI specialists has had this part reproduced in small quantities. Not that I know of, but it's possible.

        Joe,
They were being reproduced but that's over and the supply has dried up. Rich

          Rich-----

That's often what happens with parts like this. It's a VERY low demand item. So, if a part is reproduced at all, a reproduction source has to use what amounts to "temporary" tooling to produce it. Factory-type tooling would be too expensive to ever amortize over the extremely small market.

Sometimes, folks think that because a certain part is available in reproduction, it will always be available in reproduction. Not so. Reproduction parts get "discontinued" just like GM parts. Very often, for the same reason---the tooling wears out and it's not practical to replace it. For something like this, in particular, the "first run" of reproduction parts satisfies most of the existing market demand. The remaining market demand is so small that there's no way to renew the tooling and start a "second run".
