'69 Headlight door - how to close?

While checking what headlamps are presently in my '69, I inadvertantly opened one headlight door completely and would like to close it. The engine has not been started in several years and would like not to. Neither the owners manual nor the chassis service manual explains how to release the hold open device. How is this accomplished?

All but one hi-low beam appear correct. Car has 46,125 miles showing on odometer.

    Thanks, Kent #6201

    Kent,
Get under the nose of the car (lay on your back, or put it on your lift) and look at the headlamp mechanism. The actuator pushes on an over-center device to release the spring pressure. If you can see where the micro switch for the headlamp light is attached -- that is the center link of the mechanism that the actuator is attached to. Pull that center link toward the front of the car and down to release the over center mechanism -- just the direction the actuator would push if there were vacuum. Be careful of that micro switch. It is only plastic and as old as it is, it will crack easily.
All this works easier if there is someone to show you where to grab the mechanism. Once you have done it a time or two, you will be able to do it blind -- just reaching behind the grill and feeling for the center block.

Reach up through the hole under your front grille. You'll feel (or see ahead of time) the "knob" where the vacuum actuator connects to the pivot point of the headlight assembly. Give it a firm pull downward (and slightly back) and the light will slide down.

Thanks for your assistance Terry & Patrick. No lift yet and the car is very low to the ground (side mufflers clear by about 1 1/2") so I'll have to take the skinny carpet role with lights and mirrors, if necessary. Also, thanks Terry for the warning about brittleness. I'll be careful.
