    Re: Dull wheels

When you polish, do you get any blackened residue on the polishing rag? If not, you either have a clear coat finish or the wheels are anodized. Most clear coat finishes can be stipped with aircraft grade stripper (availible at Pep Boys). If anodized, you will need to take them to a metal finishing business for chemical stripping before they can be polished.

    good luck,

        Then your in luck.

You need to move up to a high speed buffing wheel. If you don't all ready have a "dotco" or air powered die grinder, get one. You can get a decent one from Harbor freight for under $20. The get some 4" buffing wheels and an arbor to mount in the air powered tool.

Use aluminum buffing compound and work the wheels over good with the buffing wheel. Remove the wheels from the car so you can really work the total wheel without the lugnuts and hub in the way.

The idea here is to treat this as you would a bench mounted buffing operation only you are taking the buffer to the wheels instead of vice versa.

        good luck,
        tc

I just finished a set of wheels from an 81. I was going to replace them but decieded to try cleaning them first. I used #000 steel wool and Mothers Mag Wheel cleaner/polish. After that I used a Wenol small buffing wheel on a drill with Wenol metal polish. The wheels look as good as new. The process took about 3hrs total. www.wenol.com Good Luck
