I'm looking at a 68 390 H.P. automatic coupe and the center crossmember is bolted to the side rails with 2 bolts on each side. I know the 70 and up cars are welded to the side rails. Is this bolted crossmember a 68 only thing or do we have a modified condition. ??? Any help is appreciated.

Re: 68 frame/crossmember help
Dave,
Automatic cars had a removable crossmember and the standard cars had a welded crossmember. The reason being was that the automatic couldn't be removed with the crossmember in place where as the standard could be. In addition to the two bolts on each side that you see there should also be one long bolt and a nut on each side that runs front to back at the top of the crossmember.- Top

Re: 68 frame/crossmember help
Dave----
As others have mentioned, all 1968-82 Corvettes with automatic transmissions used frames with a bolt-in transmission crossmember. Manual transmission cars all had a welded-in crossmember UNTIL 1979. In 1979-82 ALL Corvettes used a bolted-in transmission crossmember, regardless of transmission type.
A bolted-in type crossmember frame of the correct year range can be used for any 68-78 Corvette with manual transmission although it would obviously not be correct for those applications. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
