    Oil additives

Hey Guys!!! Any comments on adding oil additives ,(eq. slick 50, high mileage oils, etc. ) to our engines? I have 67 SB with 88k on it with one rebuild. Had a discussion with a Porsch owner who swears by it. I vote no, just need some comments about. Thanks

      Re: Oil additives

Neither GM nor any other manufacturer I know of recommends supplemental additives. In fact most specfically recommend NOT to use supplemental additives. See your owners manuals.

Motor oils certified to appropriate API service categories contain everything needed for engine protection, however, since vintage engines have different needs, modern API SM oils are not be the best, but HD diesel engine oils certified to the API CI-4 service category have a better (built in) additive packages for non-catalyst vintage engines.

There is MUCH discussion on this issue in the archives. It's been beat to death!

Corvette owners should know better than to listen to "technical advice" from Porsche owners.

Slick 50 in particular is dangerous because it has stringy teflon, which is a suspended solid that can clog oil galleries, and DuPont, the manufacturer of the "teflon" additive has specifically stated that it should not be used in engines. They even tried to stop the manufacturer from using it, but lost in court.

About ten years ago I read an FAA accident report synopsis in Flying Magazine where a single engine airplane had an inflight engine failure. Upon examination, the bearings were seized and "teflon" had partially clogged the main oil gallery at the intersection of two gun-drilled passages, which resticted oil flow causing the bearing seizure and subsequent in flight engine failure.

        Re: Oil additives

Guys, I have not used this product, s50. Iwas told long ago by a GM mechanic of the drawbacks, especially in a high mileage engine. I do have a GM diesel, 6.5 turbo, and highly recommend "Rotella".I do heavy towing and there hasn't been a engine failure, yet Knock on wood (head). I'm very much considering using 15w40 Rotella in my SB.

Thanks again for the comments, i value your discussion greatly

Ask the Porch owner what comparative tests he's done (other than reading the msrketing BS) to substantiate his claim.

Tell the Porsche guy about the diesel oil if he wants a better oil. Love to see his face when you do.
