    Dash Repair

I have a 78 Pace Car that was recently vandalized. In the process of removing the front windshield, the glass shop damaged the dash. There are numerous cracks in an area of 2"-3" in diameter on both corners of the dash. I compare it to a cracked egg shell. I don't believe the damage is great enough to warrant replacement of the dash, and I want to keep the car original. Any recommendations on how to patch/seal the area so it is 1) not noticeable, and 2) further damage can be prevented? Thanks for your help.

susan, eastwood makes a vinyl repair kit for such a problem. kit comes complete with texture material and heating element. little practice will give you fair results. perfect no, but better than looking at the cracks. good luck

I have had good luck with the companies that visit the big car dealerships to do repairs for them. Might call one of your larger dealers and ask what company does their repairs.

I agree with Jerry on the post above and would pressure the glass company that did the damage to pick up the cost of the repair.

That's a good idea to ask a Chevy dealership. I will not be responsible for the dash repair. My insurance company is picking it up (believe it or not). I only want the job done properly, maintaining the car's originality. Thanks again. ~Susan

            Susan,

Try locating a franchisee of "Dr. Vinyl" in your area. I had one of them repair similar cracking on one of my 65's dash pads many years ago and the results were excellent. Price was, as well: about $40 (Cdn).

            Good luck!

Susan, I asked a similar question a while back about a crack on the face of my '74's dash and received the same advice as you. When I followed up I was told by one person that he didn't repair the face of Corvette dashes because the covering wasn't standard vinyl but a film-like covering, more like contact paper. It sounds like your problem is in the top pad area so maybe that is different material. The crack in my dash can only be seen when the door is open so I am still living with it. Bill
