    C3 1979 Tilt Problem

Getting ready to get into steering column on a 1979 tilt steering column. The steering wheel has really bad play from side-to-side. I understand that there are "pins (?)" in the tilt mount. Question is: any tips and where can you get the pins or whatever if you need. I am pretty good at fabricating if need be but did not want to take apart until I hear from some of you folks first. Bill

The 'pins' aren't the issue...it's the upper shaft housing that wears. The 'pins' are pivot points for the upper shaft housing to rotate on relative to the lower shaft. The upper shaft housing is pot metal while the 'pins' are steel. Using the TT column to 'hoist' your body on when exiting the car puts side loading on the pivot interface and the holes in the upper shaft housing 'wallow' out causing the lateral 'slop'...

There are two alternatives to effecting repair:

    (1) Replace the worn upper housing (you have to find a suitable donor and the part's been long discontinued).

    (2) Fabricate a bushing to install in the upper housing...each job will be unique depending on how much wear the upper housing has experienced.

Jack, great to hear from you on this. Thanks and I can picture things. Do you get to this area in the usual fashion as removing wheel and working your way down as usual or is there more. I was going to just work my way down and see what I have and take some good notes and pictures.

By the way, haven't visited the board in close to nine months--got serious about working on my cars. Then, last weekend, I went and bought an 88 4+3 convertible. I told my wife I wouldn't work on it until I finished the 58, her 84 and my son's 72 conv--I have been working on the 88 for the past few days! I don't tell her though. Yikes, think she is coming this...............

        If you go to

        and

www.corvettefaq.com (look under the steering section)

you will find some very good articles written by Jim Shea. Jim is a retired engineer from the Saginaw division, the folks who built your steering. I have found it useful to copy numerous items from his papers. Truly a valuable source.
