I have a sweet little all origional 54 that keeps fouling the plugs after it runs for a very short time and then dies. The car has sat for a while and I am just getting it back into tip top shape. The fouling on the plugs is like a dark black dusting over the whole plug. What is causing this, and how can I fix it? Any help is much appriciated as I am mechinacially inclined. Thanks in advance. Doug

The "dark black dust" that you're referring to is probably carbon fouling from a overly rich fuel mixture. I'd look to the carburetors as the source of the problem. Perhaps, they require rebuilding or, at least, proper adjustment. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 54 carbs/fouled plugs
The diaphragms in the carbs deteriorate very quickly, especially when the car sits. It then runs very rich. Do you see black soot out the exhaust?
Corvette Central has the rebuild kits. So do Mary Jo Rohner, Grossmueller's, and a few others.
