    Carb Deductions - Judging

I'm wondering whether anyone can tell me the difference in points deduction between a correct service replacement carb and an original carb that is also correct but outside the 6 month "matching" window (assuming they are of equal condition).

    Thanks

That would depend on how "accurate" the service replacement was, at the years have gone by, Holley in particular has made changes to details on "service" carbs that make less correct than a service replacement that was an exact duplicate with the exception of date. The 6mo rule on Carburetors is not absolute in all cases, especially if your car is in or near the last week of production or has a low volume engine/equipment package.

I have seen cars in the judging field with Quadrajets that had the correct # and date for the car but had wrong base and wrong air horns.Original service replacement carbs will be just as the originals exception being fast idle cam will be metal instead of plastic. Plastic ones did not hold up very well.I have people send me Qjets for resto that are service replacements with the wrong choke mechanism/Bases/Air Horns/Jets/Metering Rods/Stripped Fuel Inlets. They buy these carbs on Ebay just going buy the #'s that are listed and think the carb is correct for there year.Ebay is a great place to find these carbs I buy a lot of them every week but you have to know what your looking for.And if the Judges wanted to get real picky Qjets that has been restored will not have the green Teflon coating on the shafts and accelerator pump arm I do not know of any restorers that are doing this.

Thanks Guys. I think I will leave well enough alone for now, and see how my current Service carb judges before doing anything further. I appreciate the insights into the subtlties involved - I guess a litle knowledge is dangerous.
