I bead blasted mine with glass beads at low pressure - just enough to get them cleaned up.
Most NCRS purists will cringe when you mention glass bead blasting aluminum valve covers and intakes but I think mine came out looking great.

Or you can send them out to Jerry MacNeish who does a "reskinning" process. most people who use Jerry swear by the quality of his work.

          Dave,
What year C2 - I understand that 63/64 had no casting line, however others did. Please check that fact out before removing the line. Up until this year I though that the line was only on NOS, however have now read that the later C2's had the line as shipped, again I do not know for sure Check

I just finished cleaning an intake manifold and used a product made by dupont called alluminum cleaner, it is a phosphuric acid and should be diluted but I used it straight and just applied a little at a time on the manifold and a small wire brush. keep the area wet with the acid or it leaves it a streaked. then rinse with water. The manifold I did looks just like new. Brings the brightness back also. I have tried it on other alluminum parts and does not always work as well, smoother finish items it seems to leave a dark coating that can be wiped off but still helps to clean. I also did an expansion tank and just one wash it almost looked like new. I can get the product number if you need but it is the first product used in prepping alluminum for painting.

I'll "second" Sheldon. Most of the major hardware chains like Ace or Tru Value sell aluminum "brightener" for storm doors etc. which contains phosphoric acid. Valve covers come out squeeky clean but not too bright (which is correct).
