Air hammer operation

Is there any trick to operating an air hammer? I inserted the bit, screwed on the retaining spring and depressed the trigger. The bit moved out as far as the spring would allow, but did not reciprocate. Leaving the trigger depressed just resulted in air escaping by the bit. Applied pressure ranging from 35 to 100 psi with no difference in result.(It is a new tool that I bought at harbor freight a long time ago, but this is the first time I've tried to use it.)

You have to have pressure against the bit so that it seals to the hammer. Press the tool against a piece of wood and pull the trigger. Also maybe a drop of oil in the hose inlet will help operation.

the bit has to have a force against it to function. take a log and clamp it in your vice, then practice with the air hammer, pressing the bit against the log before depressing the trigger.. be sure the bit is inserted in the hammer such that the coil spring's end wraps arouind the groove in the bit, otherwise you may launch the bit. good luck, mike
