1970 destination charge

I purchased one of those reproduction window stickers for my 1970. The destination charge is $17.50 If correct, do you suppose it was that cheap because:

a) the dealer was also located in St. Louis?

or

b) back in the day, they didn't gouge the customer?

Also, can you tell me what transmission was considered standard? Did all window stickers list the tranny? I have an M20, which I though was the "standard" transmission. Or was it the Automatic?

Mark I have the orig. sticker for my 70 it was also deliverd in st louis to Barford Chevrolet the destination charge was 13.65...Vin 2650 shipper date 2/17/70..Bill

In 1970, the freight charge was calculated based on the actual distance from the assembly plant to the delivery point and the mode of travel (truck only, or rail and truck). "Equalized Freight Rates" (same charge regardless of lower-48 destination) didn't start until the late 70's or early 80's.

1970 Corvettes were ordered with either the turbo 400 automatic or the M20 4-speep as a standard transmission. The M21 close ratio and M22 was optional for more money. 1970 was the first year a 3 speed was not the standard transmission that the Corvette came with.
