I think I have a big problem. I had my car at a body shop and they were to do a body off restoration on my 66 coupe. After 16 months of waiting on them, I gave up and went down and got the pieces of my car. They had mounted the body back on the frame to put the doors on and get every thing lined up. I asked the if they had put the correct number of shime at each position and they said yes. Well I pulled the body back off the frame when I got it home. I decided to do the work myself. I found that they had put 2 shims at each mount. When I started looking through the many boxes of parts I found the the old shims in baggies and found that some had 5 shims , some had none but were not tagged very well. Is there a set number of shims for each mount or was it an individual thing. How can I go about figuring how many really need to be at each location.

Re: Need Body Mount Shim Help
you'll have to determine # shims per mount by lining up all the body seams(doors to front and rear quarters, doors to roof and sill areas) . it'll take time but not too big a problem. If you've never tackled such a project, why not try enlisting help from the body man at the local Vo. Tech school. good luck. mike- Top

Re: Need Body Mount Shim Help
Rodney, from your description, it sounds like they did the body work, at least lined everything with the current shim configuration. If so and everything is lined up why mess with it. If that's not the case, then start from scratch.
If you search the archives for body shims, you will find folks start with leveling the frame, install 3 or 4 shims in all locations, install body and see if any have to be added or removed. I used a piece of angle iron and level to see if any had to be removed or installed to make up any difference prior to the body drop and went from there. My birdcage did not have any tweaks in it and all sat level. I installed the doors and the seams lined up.
It's really a trial and error thing for best fit.- Top
