Need to replace the Chrome dipstick on my 327/300 64 coupe. I believe the tube is original but the dipstick is not.
Any info about what I need to look for, part numbers stamped on oem?
Type of finish used.
years that would be correct for my car.
The dipstick used for 1964 base engine and L-75 was not originally chrome. It was a black-painted (external portion) dipstick with a "flat loop" pull. It was of GM #3846810. It was also used for 1964 series 10-30 trucks with 283 and it became SERVICE for many earlier applications when the original units for those applications were discontinued.
It was available from GM until very recently, but is now discontinued.
Thanks Joe
The chrome one I have is a cheap engine "dress up" replacement.
.
How does the original one "seal" to the tube opening. With a bell or a flat washed & gasket style.
Pretty sure that 64 (and late 63) used the new rubber cup style seal at the top of the dipstick. Geoffery's description would be correct for a 63. The part number that Joe provided would be the correct number for the 64 dipstick, if you can find one.
catalog - as I drew these from the actual parts years ago. This is a bell shaped cap with a flat handle. And I don't think they are that rare to locate. I checked our database and it says we still have 53 pieces. (Yikes!) Get up and call in now to avoid the ebay rush.
See page 93. Let no child be left behind. Including indolent Corvette ones with parts in stock to examine.
