    C2 Alternator Rebuild

While dis-assembling my 66 37 amp alternator prior to rebuilding I noticed a varnish type coating on some of the metal surfaces of the stator and rotor. Is the purpose of this to serve as a form of corrosion protection or does it serve another purpose? Also is there anything available to be applied when restoring the aternator? Thanks - Doug

It's an INSULATING varnish. I believe that you can purchase this material from industrial electrical supply companies. If you apply it, you have to be sure that you apply it only to the surfaces originally coated and no other surfaces.
