GM# for 1967 327/300 Engine Dipstick

The dipstick in my 1967 327/300 is too long - or the tube is too short. When full the oil shows about 1" above the "Full" mark. The former owner had scribed new "Full" and "Add" marks to compensate. I have verified through several oil changes that his home-made marks are accurate but I wish to get the correct dipstick. The number on the current version is 3862730. Is that correct or if not, what is the good number?

3862730 is the number in the '68 parts book. Should be functionally good if you have te correct oil pan.

Yes, the GM #3862730 is the correct dip-stick. It's still available from GM, too, although it might be slightly different in nuances compared to the original.

For this dipstick to work correctly, though, it's essential that the upper dipstick TUBE be the correct one, too. The original dipstick tube was GM #3876784. This dipstick is 9-1/4" developed length from the seating "collar" to the top of the tube AND it has a swaged down top section for about 2" in length. That dipstick tube was discontinued 30 years ago and replaced by GM #3865664 which is still available. The tubes are the same except that the replacement does not have the swaged down top. I believe that the original style is available in reproduction, though. Either tube is 100% functionally equivalent.

If you have the correct dipstick, the correct upper tube, proper installation AND THE CORRECT OIL PAN, then your dipstick should read correctly with no need for "re-calibration".

I believe the 327 engine block is circa 1962. Would that make a difference?

I don't think that it would make any difference with respect to the parts previously described. In fact, with the aforementioned dip stick and tube, even if you had installed the C1 oil pan I think you would get a correct oil reading. However, if you have installed a passenger car or Camaro pan, it would NOT provide an accurate reading.

I would guess that it is a passenger car oil pan. Do you have a number for that dipstick?

There were numerous passenger oil pans. If it's one of the more common ones, then you need dipstick tube GM #3876870 with dipstick GM #3951576.

My usual friends at GM were not very helpful. Of course my Corvette is older than they are! The original stick was 21" head-to-base. I located a Mr. Gasket unit (#6235, Small Block Chevrolet 1965-77) that is 19" at the same dimension. It should work although I have to lose the chrome. Thanks for your help.
