My 1970 has the L46 engine w/ 4 speed, non-ec, no a/c.
The carb on it now is numbers-correct for my car, except it is a replacement carb from 1973 - a 7040507.
I had planned on using this carb. and taking whatever (if any) deductions it would bring in the future. However, it continues to leak gas out of the airhorn gasket (the top gasket), near the accelerator pump.
It started this leaking out of the blue, so I used a new gasket from a rebuild kit, but it still leaks. I have posted about this leak before, and a few people suggested the float level might be too high. I have checked this twice, and don't think it's the culprit. Another likely suggestion is that it's warped. This makes sense, but why all of a sudden?
More importantly for judging in the future, should I attempt to find an original 7040207 carb with the correct year and month (probably very hard to locate)? I did get a quote for an un-restored one, but it had a later build date than my car. It was $700.... Besides being too expensive, I don't see how a post-dated carb would be any better than ANY carb in that regard.
I have on back-order, the judging manual, so I don't know what it says about carbs.
I'd really like some different views on this. I'm not ready to get my car judged in the near future, but it is my long-term goal (2-5 years).
Thank you. Mark #44888
