    chrome cowl vents

I bought some chrome mid year cowl vents at last weekends Corvette meet. How do I remove the chrome so I can paint them?

    There are two methods:

    (1) Acid etch the chrome and underlying copper/nickle to get down to bare steel. Just about any plating shop will do this for you.

    (2) Take them to a chrome platter and have the layers removed via reverse polarity.

Approach #2 is better in that it's gentle and doesn't 'tear' into the underlying surface. But, Catch-22, few plating shops will offer this service as what other materials come off the part tend to 'contaminate' their plating tanks. Those who will reverse polarity strip a part, store it and wait until it's time to discard and replenish their plating tank electrolyte.

Since the underlying surface here is stamped steel that will ultimately be primered and painted, there's not much advantage to approach #2. The raw stamped steel finish of the parts is going to be covered over with paint anyway...

if the chrome is intact, ie, no flaking in spots, lightly glass bead the grills and paint em. mike

Can't you just put them in a diluted solution of Muratic acid, I believe it eats chrome right off and then rinse in Baking soda and water.
