Where all 1963 dash units’ vinyl coated? The vinyl on the dash was very brittle and had cracked in a few areas (where there were hollow spots between the dash and the vinyl). I removed all the vinyl last evening to find a textured or grained fiberglass panel.
By the designation of smooth finish; would this mean no texture or grain on 63's built prior to #3200? The texture of the fiberglass on my July 63 looks just like the texture of the vinyl I removed. I was curious if the original intent was to spray finish vs. vinyl on the later 63's and they were looking for a textured finish.
My original 63 dash (serial 6099) built january 3rd has no vinyl overlay. the texture is that of vinyl. in other words, it looks like vinyl but is painted fiberglass. My radio surround is also absent of the ss bezel that was used to "hold" the vinyl edges. Therefore an early car has painted glass with no bezel where the later cars have vinyl covering with bezels. hope this helps
Tracy,
My 63 s/n 414 has a smooth painted dash as did s/n 1664. My other old 63 I bought in 68 has a red vinyl covered dash. It think it was s/n 4548. Have it written down somewhere but I know it was really close to that.
