    C-1 trunk board

We are almost finished with a body off restoration of my '56'. My dilema is the spare tire board. The current spare tire board is a little rough and possibly original to the car, as the spare tire is original. All the current reproduction spare tire boards have what they call a "football" in the board. My present board has no "football". The board is a little rough looking but a thourgh cleaning should help the appearance of the board. To finish reconditioing the board I will need to do some sanding then painting. My dilema -- clean the board or recondition the board ? If I recondition the board what finish of paint / type do I use ?

clean it. were i to judge the board, i'd deduct a little more for a repo board than i would for your genuine board, regardless of condition. mike

The factory used a black stair and do not put it on real heavy.

        Jeff,
I had the same situation. I decided to protect the original jacking instruction sheet very carefully with a thick plastic sheet and tape around the edges, cleaned and sanded the board and then thinned some black lacquer with some lacquer thinner to the consistency of a stain and applied with a terry rag. It took two coats to stain it to the darkness needed. It worked perfect because it allowed all of the grain to show through and it didn't look labored over. I still expect to get hit on a condition point or two, but that's ok.
        Good luck.

Unfortunately mine is completely delaminated in many sheets. Instructions long gone. I may try and glue it together.

My guess is..there are plenty of nice used trunk boards around..try any of the big Corvette parts houses that stock used parts...or have been in business a while.
