The '56-57 JG book simply lists the various manufacturer/model combinations of tires used in that period of time with the tag line:
"Whitewall width (if so equipped) varies from 2" to about 2-3/4"; wider whitewall widths appear to have been used in earlier production."
My hunch here is the JG book is telling us the exact width of the whitewall not only varied by mfgr/model but by time of manufacture. That says you need to contact the National Team Leader for a better answer that's more specific and you'll have to narrow the question to the specific mfgr/model of tire you want the information on.
"REAL Corvettes had blackwalls. sissy vettes had whitewalls"
Don't get me wrong Mike, I love blackwalls. The best tire I've ever seen was on a vintage Ferrari. The Michelin XWX. Smooth balckwall with very little design or writing on the face. I wanted to get a set for my aftermarket wheels, but they cost over $300 a tire!
Putting a blackwall on a factory black wheel is a whole different deal. Not a good look if you ask me.
