    Replacement Fasteners

Does anyone have a source for replacement fasteners (NOS or reproduction). I'm looking for side cover bolts for my Muncie 4 spd. The bolts have the letters R S C on the head. I'm in the process of resurrecting a '71 LT-1 after 20 years of storage and I'd like to keep it as correct as possible. Thanks for the help.

I don't believe that anyone makes the 1/4-20 size "RSC" headmark bolts in reproduction. But, if anyone does, it will be Paragon. You could try calling them. In fact, I'm surprised that yours has the "RSC" headmark. Most of the Muncie side cover bolts that I've seen have no headmark; just a plain head with no markings at all.

Also, if you have the original bolts, why do you want to replace them? You could just clean up what you have and have them zinc plated. Or, if they were natural steel as the bolts that I've seen in this application were, just clean them up thoroughly with a wire wheel.

This application does not require a high-strength bolt.

      Joe,

Thanks for the info. The transmission was out of the car when I bought it, as well as the bellhousing. The side cover is missing at least three of the bolts and all the others have this marking. I just assumed they were original...but then again I could be wrong. Does any other member have a Muncie, '71 vintage with this marking on the side cover bolts. My car was produced in early March '71, production number is 11130.

      Thanks for the help.

I would think that your side cover bolts probably are original; "RSC" was a fastner headmark commonly found in this period, so, although I've not seen them on Muncie side covers, that doesn't mean that they weren't used. As I've said before, the notion that only one headmark bolt was used for any standard-type fastner application is naive.

Paragon has, in addition to its reproduction fastner line, a large inventory of used original Corvette fastners. If you called them, perhaps they could find a few of the headmark bolts that you're looking for.

          Re: Original Fasteners Noted

From my experience the transmission side cover bolts on mid years and 68-69 head markings were SBC and blank. This is not to say other markings could be found. The long 7/16 bolt that goes into the main case is generally a "G" head marking. The other shorter 7/16 ones vary, common one is SBC.
