C3 SHIFTER REMOVAl

I would like to remove and rebuild my stock 4 speed shifter on a 71 big block. I do not want to remove the trans or exhaust. Is all of the work done from underneath? or can it be made easier from the interior? Any tips would help. Should i remove the frame bracket with the shifter attached?

All work, with the exception of removing both the upper and lower boot are accomplished from underneath.

Your lower boot will most likely need replacement if it has not been replaced in 37 years. With a new one in hand you will see how the unit is removed.

I usually do this mostly from inside the car. Remove the shifter knob, console plate, and lower boot. Then, remove the 2 bolts retaining the shifter assembly to the bracket. This is most easily done from under the car. Remove the shifter rods at the transmission. Finally, pull the shifter assembly out from the top.
