Muncie rear mount threads stripped out??

One of my muncie's rear mount threads on the driver side are stripped out. I suppose I could see if the local aluminum man can fill the bad hole and I can drill and tap a new 7/16" hole. Maybe use a helicoil if there enough wall thickness to get it done. Any experience with this?? Dick Gutman

Lots of these strip out. Since a helicoil requires a larger hole, you may have enough to drill and tap for the helicoil and be fine.

If not, you may have to put an insert in there.

You can get the helicoil kits and they work fine. I've never had a problem yet, and I've put helicoils in ones used in the race car and one transmission was beat nearly to death but the shifter bolts that had helicoils didn't fail.

A Heli-Coil repair for these bolt holes is not difficult, at all, and is very practical and common. The finished product will have better threads than original. However, for this, particular, situation, there is another option. The original bolts only "grab" about the first 3/4"-1" of threads in the extension housing hole threads. However, there is about 1-1/2"-2" of threads for each hole. So, if you use a longer bolt, you can usually solve the problem without any thread repair. There is no loss of strength, either. All you are doing is "moving up" the thread engagement portion of the hole. Instead of grabbing the lower 3/4"-1" of threads, you're grabbing the upper 3/4"-1" of threads. It's sort of like having "spare threads" factory installed for you.
