    C2:67 Another find

I know this may sound like trivia, but today was cold and rainy and a little too cold to work on my 67. So I thought I'd organize the shop side of the garage and look for some old parts. Found my 1976 Kraeuter tool box, and went through the bottom. Among a bunch of junk, a little rusty 1/4" bolt with a integral star washer looked familiar. Here it is:

This was after I cleaned it up. It looked like the rest of these rusty parts from the tool box:

EL markings. That's where my distributor shield top bolt has been all this time. I had gotten dinged on it and bought a Paragon repro with E markings.

So I fired up the plating setup and put a coat of zinc on it. Here's the repro and the original side by side:

Bet you can't tell which is the old one. The original is back on the 67 where it belongs.

Having Fun (on a rainy day)

When you say "distributor shield" where does this go exactly?

What "plating" set up do you use?

    Thanks,

    Steve

      Steve,

It's the one bolt which goes vertically down on a 67 SB ignition shielding above the distributor.

I use a Caswell Zinc and Copy Cad kit. I finish shiny parts off with a blue Nylok buffing wheel (on a drill in a vise).

Jerry, You must have the rare "wing nut delete" option for your top shield!!

Don - Shouldn't everybody???????????? But, I must admit it does seem to be a rare small block option. Pete

Not the side but the top of the shielding

There were not wing nuts on the top of the shielding (small block) rather the bolt that was shown above. Wing nuts were put on all the other portions of the shielding. There are three spots where the top shielding connect one on each side and one on the top of the shield on the drivers side. (I have the stupid repo also)

Re: Not the side but the top of the shielding

Keith - I refer you to the 1967 AIM, UCP U69, Sheet A8 part call outs #1- 423553 Screw Asm and #2 3728418 Wing Bolt. You will note the that the 423553 Screw Asm secures the top of the shield on the driver's side. While one will find a number of different head marking, mine has an RBW, the lock washer that Gerry's photo shows so nicely is the style with the larger segments or ears (I call them "shake proof" washers) not the newer style with more and sharper points. me the points off. Well, at least one point. But, I had fun for two hours on one bolt. A great hobby.

                    Peter,

I agree, you are right on the money on the width of the teeth on the shake proof washer. Wider with less angle. Also, the RBW is common as is just the E, especially for 63-65 cars.

The "E", without the dot next to the E, is what is found on 62 top shields also--with again, the identical washer to Gerald's EL.

I have one of those bolts, and I have several that look very similar to that
with a lock washer instead of a star washer, these are off my 68 doors and they
have either an "anchor" or "SEMS" head mark.

                        Interesting...

                          Re: C2:67 Another find

Steve - They used screws like the ones you noted and others w/ other headmarking and the "shake-proof" lock washers in various applications. I think that the part number call out for the top shield screw is unique, but I need to double check, so maybe these screws were plated differently, different hardness, or a different length because of the location. Whatever the difference, there were only a few different "typical" headmarkings used for the screw in that location as others have noted. Pete
