I am an extreme novice when it comes to cars, but I have always liked corvettes. I would like to rebuild either a C2 or C3 when I become a little bit more financially stable. I was looking around and I noticed that GM has released a newer version of the ZL1. This engine carries a pretty hefty price tag however, about $17,500. My question is this, is this engine really that powerful, or is it that expensive primarily because of its rarity? I've seen engines with more horsepower at a fraction of that cost. Would someone be able to get the same performance and quality with a cheaper engine? I was just curious. I appreciate any help.

The SERVICE-only engine of which you speak was manufactured in a total quantity of 200 engines. As far as I know, all GM warehouse stock is depleted. However, some dealers may have them in stock. They are rated at 520 hp. The primary reason for the high cost is the aluminum block used with this engine.
It is very possible to build an engine of this power rating and, even far beyond this power rating, without spending $17,500.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
